Woodcuts, some to be shown for the first time, by renowned West Tisbury artist Ruth Kirchmeier capture the calm and energy of ponds edge and island woodlands and field. Still-life's and interiors will also be shown. Ms. Kirchmeier's work is complex, indicating her keen capacity to render, and to wash the fluency of her line with layers of color that evoke the depth and beauty of her subject.
Plein Air oil painters Elizabeth Lockhart Taft and Judith B. Howells occasionally paint together, as members of a Vineyard Plein Air group. They are both Vineyard residents, though Ms. Howells spends half the year in CA. It is interesting to see their work together - each has a distinctive style - yet there is a connection that has to do with palate and light. Once she sets up to paint, Ms. Taft enters what she refers to as "a sacred place" - painting outside is like entering a cathedral.
Ms. Howells has a similar approach to painting on-site - "I do consciously select rather solitary places, often overlooked spaces where land is vulnerable to man's encroachment. I want that sense of solitude and vulnerability in my work."
Works by other Gallery Artists, including photographer Barbara Norfleet, her award winning cibachromes and silver prints will be featured w a reception from 5-7 on Sunday, August 14, 2016; other photographers include Karen Philippi, Marjorie Gillette Wolfe, National Geographic photographers Joel Sartore, Jim Brandenburg; beaded jewelry by Janette Vanderhoop, nocturnes and luminous landscapes by Jennifer Clement, landscapes by Marston Clough & Julia Purinton oils, wire and ceramic nests by Phil Licthenhan, mixed media constructions and sculpture by Rebecca Henriksen, cast bronze by Elizabeth Helfer, among other artworks, will also be on view.
Small "Island Vignettes" by water colorist John Nickerson Athearn are also available - with a portion of sales benefiting local non-profits, thanks to the generosity of the artist.
